Annunciation Catholic Church – History Timeline
In March of 1979, the Church of the Annunciation in Longwood was founded as a satellite Church of St. Mary Magdalen in Altamonte Springs. With Fr. Patrick Caverly as the Pastor, these combined churches included 3,000 families.
After three years of continued growth, the Church of the Annunciation became an independent parish, with Fr. Caverly assigned as Pastor.
A building fund drive held in 1981 led to the expansion of the church in 1982 by adding 500 seats and the Family Life Center with educational, social and office facilities. Land with buildings for a rectory and convent were also acquired. An additional 10 acres to the south of the church were purchased for parking and future development.
Project Hope groundbreaking on September 1, 1991 began construction of the Cultural Center, Gymnasium and Child Care Center. The work was completed and dedicated later in 1992.
In February of 1995, Reverend Patrick J. Caverly, V.G., pastor of the Church of the Annunciation, and a group of parishioners took on the challenge of starting a new school. “The Promise and the Dream” campaign was kicked off to fund the construction of Annunciation Catholic Academy.
Two kindergarten classes were started in leased modular classrooms in the fall of 1995, and a full K-8 school opened in the fall of 1996. Dr. Margaret E. Curran was selected as principal by Father Caverly at the beginning of October of 1995. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held with Bishop Norbert M. Dorsey, C.P., on December 16, 1995.
Construction of the building was completed in July, a month before schedule. Classes began for grades K through 8 on September 1, 1996.
Our current church building was dedicated on April 8, 2002.
Fr. Stephen Parkes became Pastor of our Parish in the summer of 2011.
On September 23, 2020, Fr. Stephen is Ordained and Installed as the 15th Bishop of Savannah.
